Denver had its first padded practice of the summer on Monday -- without its superstar quarterback.

Head coach Gary Kubiak stuck to his script and held Peyton Manning out. Backup Brock Osweiler received No. 18's first-team snaps, according to the team's official website.

Said Kubiak simply: "Peyton needs his break."

Manning might argue with that stance. Kubiak's policy might be for his own quarterback's good, though.

At this point in his career, Manning can't possibly pick up anything more in a training camp. It's wiser to sit the passer down, let his arm rest, and gear him up for the season

So far, Kubiak has liked the results.

"I think that his arm looked really good, " he said. I thought, physically, looked really good, and I want to stay that course. I think that it will be good for him and good for the team."
