The Atlanta Falcons entered their Week 4 game looking to prove they were for real against the Carolina Panthers. Their previous wins had come against the Oakland Raiders and New Orleans Saints. The Raiders have been solid this season, but the Saints are sitting winless at this point.

Although the Panthers had a losing record coming into the game, people still respected the defending NFC Champions who had previously lost to playoff teams. They still seemed to be the favorite to claim the NFC South crown this season.

After Sunday’s performance, that’s no longer the case. The Atlanta Falcons made a case for themselves with an offensive explosion which saw career days out of both quarterback Matt Ryan and receiver Julio Jones as they defeated the Falcons 48-33. Ryan threw for 503 yards and four touchdowns on the day. Yes, 503 yards. Most of that went to Jones who hauled in 12 receptions for an amazing 300 yards, including a game-sealing 75-yard touchdown.

2015 NFL MVP Cam Newton struggled as he threw just 165 yards on 14-of-25 passes. He had one touchdown and no picks, but had to leave the game after being evaluated for a concussion. After throwing his lone touchdown of the game to receiver Kelvin Benjamin, Newton then ran in a two-point conversion as the Panthers tried to make a comeback.

He was hit hard on the play and had to be taken to the locker room. Backup Derek Anderson continued the furious attempt to get back in the game and threw for 172 yards and two touchdowns. He did throw two picks and eventually the Jones touchdown made it impossible for Carolina to get back into this one.

Three Stars

Julio Jones, Falcons – 12 catches, 300 yards, 1 touchdown

Matt Ryan, Falcons – 28-37, 503 yards, 4 touchdowns, 1 interception

Robert Alford, Falcons – 2 interceptions, 1 pick-six, 3 tackles, 3 passes defended
