NFL referee caught in embarrassing hot mic moment

Published Dec. 13, 2015 5:01 p.m. ET

NFL referee Tony Corrente was busted by a hot mic during Sunday’s Carolina Panthers-Atlanta Falcons game.

The Panthers were leading 38-0 with less than three minutes left in the game when they went for it on fourth-and-1 at the Atlanta 42. Backup quarterback Derek Anderson was stopped short of a first down, turning the ball over to the Falcons and thereby extending the game rather than having Carolina run out the clock on kneel downs.

That’s when Corrente was caught on the mic complaining that the Panthers were stopped.

Corrente will probably be hearing from the league’s head of officials after that. He also might be looking at a harsher penalty given that this is not his first time being caught by a live mic.
