NFL Power Rankings: Week Two, A New Number One

This weeks NFL Power Rankings come with a brand new number one. Will they be able to hold on for more than a week? Where does the rest of the NFL stack up?

New England Patriots

(23-21)

Last week: 1-0 recordLast rank: 4

Jimmy Garoppolo did all he needs to do, win. What was more impressive is doing it against the NFC favorites, Arizona Cardinals. Granted, they were a made field goal away from a loss, but a win is a win, against a team like that.2

Green Bay Packers

(27-23)

The Packers played a very underestimated Jacksonville Jaguars team and won. Although Aaron Rodgers wasn’t dominate, he was effective. The defense did the rest and they pulled out a four point victory.3

Seattle Seahawks

There is some initial concerns over the win against Miami at home. The 12 points on the board was not a great offensive showing. The defense however was solid. They lost the turnover battle, forced seven punts, five sacks, and five pass deflections.4

Denver Broncos

The Denver Broncos either have Cam Newton‘s number, or their defense is that good. The 194 yards allowed, most in the first half, was an incredible showing. Maybe you can win without a great offense, but can they keep it up?5

Carolina Panthers

What happened to the Panthers in the second half? Did Cam Newton stop playing? This Panthers team will need to rebound in hopes of keeping themselves in the conversation against an OK San Francisco.Next: Power Rankings: 6-10

Cincinnati Bengals

Andy Dalton was sacked, sacked again, and five more time. They will need to have a lot better showing on the offensive line to control the Steelers to even have a chance on Sunday. The defense looked sharp in the passing game, but the run defense left something to be desired.7

Pittsburgh Steelers

A very slow start to the Steelers offense was attributed to Josh Norman. When they got Antonio Brown away from Norman, he was lights out. DeAngelo Williams looked good, but can he keep it up? The run defense and pass rush were also a solid honorable mention.

Kansas City Chiefs

It is concerning that San Deigo took them to overtime. San Diego is a perennial let down, but they came to play. Division games are always suppose to be a challenge, so this week will be the real test against the Texans.9

Oakland Raiders

One of the most dangerous teams in the AFC West is lingering in the shadows. Drew Brees and the Saints in the Superdome is a dangerous combination. However, Oakland out maneuvered them, especially in the fourth. Derrick Carr once again played incredibly well. The defense will have to step up to win this division.10

Arizona Cardinals

(21-23)

They were a missed field goal away from being in the top two in power rankings. However, Larry Fitzgerald looked very Fitz-like in his showing with two touchdowns. The defense still couldn’t shut down the Patriots when it mattered most.Next: Power Rankings: 11-15

Houston Texans

(23-14)

They beat the Bears by nine points. It is not the blowout that I was expecting. However, Brock Osweiler is still behind a great defense. They will need him to be better when they run into a better offense and defense.12

New York Giants

The New York Giants avoided a week one disaster when they beat division foe, the Dallas Cowboys. It is a case of Eli Manning being just good enough. The defense wasn’t anything to cheer about but kept the Cowboys from running away with the game. Again they will need to be much better if they are going to win with their schedule.13

Baltimore Ravens

Congratulations Ravens fans, you beat the Buffalo Bills, and who do you have next, the Cleveland Browns? We will wait to cast judgement when you play a team that is expected to go at least 8-8.14

Detriot Lions

In a game with no defense, the Detroit Lions found a way to beat the Indianapolis Colts. Marvin Jones came out the leading receiver with four catches for 85 yards but no touchdowns. They are playing top receiver by committee, which time will tell if they can keep it up.15

Minnesota Vikings

The Vikings survived week one without Teddy Bridgewater. They were playing the weak defensed Titans team. They will face a much better team and division rival, Green Bay Packers. They will need to find another gear to win against the Packers.Next: Power Rankings: 16-20

Indianapolis Colts

(35-39)

Andrew Luck had a good game. It really came down to which offense could score more points. The both defenses were non-existent and that left them open for a losing effort. They face the Denver Broncos in week two, which could turn into a slaughter if the defense can’t stop anybody.17

Dallas Cowboys

Dez Bryant was pretty much a dud in week one, as he went one catch for eight yeards. This team was up early but could not do anything to close out a struggling Giants defense. They must now face a division match up with the Redskins to avoid going 0-2.18

Jacksonville Jaguars

They lost, however they played an inspiring game against a very good Green Bay Packers team. Blake Bortles was solid with 320 yards of passing. If he can eliminate the mistakes, they could very well go 1-1 after week two against the Chargers.19

New Orleans Saints

The New Orleans Saints looked like they were going to win in the Superdome and start 1-0, but Oakland and Jack Del Rio had other ideas. It was a great offensive game, but just fell short defensively.20

Washington Redskins

I understand that the Steelers are a good team, but when you refuse to move Josh Norman to stick to Antonio Brown, the coach becomes the issue. The offense, which Jay Gruden is known for, was lackluster at best.Next: Power Rankings: 21-26

Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Jameis Winston had looked good, but against a questionable Falcons defense. Tampa Bay’s Doug Martin and Mike Evans were the stars. They will need to keep momentum as they face an Arizona team looking to bounce back from a disappointing loss.22

San Diego Charger

They took the favorite team to win the AFC West to overtime. Not bad for a team who had the third worst record in the NFL last season. They had a meltdown in the fourth and lost a 17 point lead, which is very concerning.23

New York Jets

The New York Jets get points for playing an inspired game against the Cincinnati Bengals. However, it was a defense who couldn’t keep them out of field goal range in the last 2 minutes that cost the Jets the game. They face the Buffalo Bills, who spoiled their playoff dreams last season, in week two. Can they show the same grit as they did for September 11th attacks 15th anniversary?24

Miami Dolphins

(10-12)

Last week: 0-1 recordLast rank: 21

The Miami Dolphins played a tough football game at Seattle. They were able to contain Russell Wilson and the keep them within striking distance the entire game. Can they pull out a win against a Brady-less Patriots in week two?25

Buffalo Bills

(7-13)

If the 111 yards passing doesn’t impress you, than neither will this Bills offense. It was a terrible performance and even LeSean McCoy got half that on the ground. If the Ravens had proven themselves, I would pat this defense on the back but the offense was too terrible to give anyone credit.26

San Francisco 49ers

Well, they won a game against what proved to be the worst team in the NFL. The lack of offense by the Rams ended up being a blessing, but their offense looked good against a decent defense. However, they must refocus quickly because they face the defending NFC Champs, Carolina Panthers, in week two.Next: Power Rankings: 27-32

Philadelphia Eagles

Listen, you won, and that is good Eagle fans, but you beat arguably the worst team in the NFL. Wentz did look good and like he belonged on the football field. This week, you get the Chicago Bears and you should start the season 2-0. The season will get tougher soon enough though.28

Chicago Bears

Well, Jay Cutler didn’t end up hurting the Bears that bad, but he couldn’t do much either, sacked five times. He gets to face the Eagles this week so it could be a match up that we need to see if Jay Cutler is going to be ok.29

Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons faced a quarterback that is still up and coming and he did well. The issue for Atlanta was field position, they gave Tampa Bay decent field position, while starting themselves inside the 20 four seperate times.30

Tennessee Titans

(16-25)

Marcus Mariota looked pretty good in their week one game against the Vikings. DeMarrco Murray looked a little rusty but happy to be the top guy again. If they can get that defense moving, they are headed in the right direction, minus a win of course.31

Cleveland Browns

Cleveland is well, Cleveland. Hue Jackson looked like he is not going to solve the Browns problems in an offseason. RGIII could be out for the season, however I wasn’t looking like the answer to begin with.32

LA Rams
