Newest Raven Terrance West got OK from Ray Rice to wear No. 27
New Ravens running back Terrance West wanted a new number now that he's on the active roster, and it just so happened that Ray Rice's old number became available.
West, who initially wore No. 42 upon signing with the practice squad, wanted the same number he wore in college at Towson and with Cleveland (No. 28), but it's already taken by safety Brynden Trawick. Then looking for any number in the 20s, the only one left was No. 27 after Asa Jackson's release earlier this week.
West, who got to know Rice during his time at nearby Towson, still talks to the former Ravens running back about once a week. He wanted to secure Rice's blessing before wearing his jersey number.
"I asked him about it, and he was cool with it," West said via ESPN.com's Jamison Hensley. "He's helped me a lot in my career."
West is already on his third team in two seasons after getting drafted in the third round by the Browns last year. He was released by the Titans after fumbling twice in the first two games of the season. Meanwhile, Rice is still waiting for his second chance in the NFL after last year's highly publicized domestic violence incident.
