The last McMurry War Hawk who made an NFL roster played in 1963.

When Jeret Smith got his chance to end that drought with the Kansas City Chiefs, the waterworks began.

"(I) started crying," Smith told KTXS in Abilene. "It was crazy because from age six it was just like, oh I wanna go to the NFL, I wanna go to the NFL, and now I still can't believe that it's actually here."

He better believe it. Smith is still a long shot to crack Kansas City's roster, despite his historical run at his alma mater.

He owns a school record 2,729 receiving yards. And, more impmortantly, Smith owns his own fate as a summer camp player.

"It took a very long time, and then all the hard work that I did, I'm just glad it paid off," Smith said. "I finally get the opportunity to showcase what I have for them, and I'm glad that they recognized that I was good enough to play in the NFL."
