Miami Dolphins forever linked to unwanted history

The Miami Dolphins have a storied tradition that at least on the surface appears to be turning back towards that tradition that made the team great. There is however a black mark on the franchise and they had nothing to do with it.

Earlier this morning I was dropping my kids off at school when the radio announcer began talking about the Miami Dolphins which is odd because I live in Fayetteville, Nc and was listening to an a.m. talk show.

Then it hit me the second he said, “thirty years ago today”.

Monday Night Football. Howard Cosell. New England Patriots. And John Lennon.

The legacy of John Lennon is well known. Many will point out his abusive nature or his overbearing attitude but very few musicians had an impact on the entire world as John Lennon. Both in life and in death.

Lennon and Paul McCartney were my favorite artists growing up as an 80’s teen. They were prevalent in my household as Beatles music was often played by my father. The news of Lennon’s death that night did not sit well with any of our family. It was and still is shocking.

Lennon’s assassination was my first real experience with the way this world is. How meaningless others take life and how some can shape an entire world with a callous act. It was my introduction to the world around me.

As a lifelong Dolphins fan the memory of that MNF game is limited to the words and voice of Howard Cosell as he broke the news to the viewers. The Dolphins would block a late game field goal attempt by the Patriots sending the game into overtime where they would win.

May you continue to rest in peace John Lennon!
