Johnny Manziel reportedly indicted by grand jury on assault charge

Former Cleveland Browns quarterback Johnny Manziel was indicted Sunday by a grand jury in Dallas on a misdemeanor assault with bodily injury charge, according to local outlets ABC News 8 and KRLD-AM.

Manziel is accused of hitting his ex-girlfriend Colleen Crowley multiple times in January while driving her from a bar to her place in Fort Worth.

Crowley told police that she tried to jump out of the moving car but Manziel stopped and pulled her back to the car. According to the police report, Crowley pleaded with a valet at Hotel Zaza in Dallas, "Please don't let him take me. I'm scared for my life." Manziel eventually left with her in the car.

According to KRLD-AM, Manziel and Crowley had an out-of-court settlement, but the outlet could not confirm what that settlement might be. Crowley was granted a protective order against Manziel that doesn’t allow him to see her for two years.

Police decided to send the case to the grand jury, which typically hears only felony cases, instead of arresting Manziel.

Manziel faces up to a year in jail and a $4,000 fine if convicted. He was cut by the Browns in the offseason and has yet to be picked up. He is under investigation by the NFL for the incident involving Crowley and could be suspended.

The former Heisman Trophy winner has been dropped by two of his agents and has lost a number of his endorsements this offseason. Drew Rosenhaus severed ties with Manziel after the quarterback refused to enter treatment earlier this month. Manziel has been spotted at a number of nightclubs this offseason and most recently at the Coachella music festival.
