Colts QB Hasselbeck ranked among NFL's top backups

The Indianapolis Colts' fortunes rest largely on the health and performance of star quarterback Andrew Luck. But if Luck were to be injured at some point this season, Colts fans can take comfort in the fact that all would not necessarily be lost. According to one pundit, the team has one of the NFL's most enviable backup situations.

ESPN's John Clayton says Colts' QB Matt Hasselbeck is the league's third-best backup. Ryan Fitzpatrick of the New York Jets is first, while Mark Sanchez of the Philadelphia Eagles is second.

"Even though he's 39, Hasselbeck is still a quality quarterback," Clayton wrote. "This might be his last year, but he's the perfect option if something happens to Andrew Luck".

Hasselbeck, who is entering his 17th season in the NFL, has appeared in seven games since signing with the Colts in 2013.  He may not be the Pro-Bowl performer he was in his prime with the Seattle Seahawks, but he provides Indianapolis with reliable option - one the team is hoping they won't need as they look to make a run at the Super Bowl this season.
