Byron Jones already impressive during Cowboys' OTA practices
It didn't take long for Dallas Cowboys rookie first-round cornerback Byron Jones to catch the eye of Cowboys players and coaches. With Orlando Scandrick back in the mix, the Cowboys have been working Jones in with the first team defense some snaps in the slot. During Wednesday's OTAs practice, veteran tight end Jason Witten watched first hand as Jones might an incredible play to prevent a completion from Tony Romo to Witten.
“That was a good play,” Witten said, per Todd Archer of ESPN. “He made a good play. I think anytime you can get in a competitive situation is good. He’s coming on there. He is playing the slot. Thought he did a good job.”
On the other hand, defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli wasn't as thrilled with the play as Witten was.
“Getting hands on it is different than getting interceptions," Marinelli said, per ESPN. "It’s not good enough until we get the ball. He’s around it. That’s good. But what we want is the ball.”
Jones didn't let Witten's comments get to his head, because he has a great coach stressing the importance of what Jones needs to accomplish to become a better football player.
“He (Marinelli) wants interceptions, not just PBUs (pass breakups),” Jones said. “That’s another step you’ve got to take.”
Jones will continue to compete for first team snaps throughout OTAs, minicamps and training camp. Scandrick is entrenched as the starter, but behind him the Cowboys have several question marks the cornerback position. It would not be surprising to see Jones earn one of the top three spots on the Cowboys' depth chart at cornerback for the start of the 2015 season.
