Bills CB Gilmore's shoulder injury not believed to be season-ending
The Buffalo Bills were forced to play most of the second half on Sunday without one of their best defensive players. Cornerback Stephon Gilmore exited in the third quarter after attempting to make a tackle on running back Akeem Hunt and was unable to return.
His shoulder reportedly "popped out" on the play, but it doesn't sound like he'll miss an extended period of time.
Rex Ryan said in his press conference Monday that Gilmore's injury isn't believed to be season-ending.
“We’ll see how it goes,” Ryan said. “He did leave with a shoulder. We’ll see how he feels. If he can go, we need him out there. He's a tremendous player for us. … Don’t believe it’s season-ending, you can rule that out.”
That's obviously a good sign for Gilmore, but it doesn't mean he'll be able to play this week. Fortunately, the Bills have depth at the position, most notably with rookie Ronald Darby.
Ryan said if Gilmore can't go, Leodis McKelvin will take his spot as a starting corner.
"If Gilmore can't go, Leodis [McKelvin] will have to step in there, and we'll be fine with it," Ryan said.
One player who the Bills have missed for much of the season is safety Aaron Williams. After suffering a neck injury earlier in the year, Williams was placed on short-term injured reserve. Ryan provided an update on the safety, giving him a 50-50 shot to come back this season.
"Aaron won't play this week," Ryan said. "[He] will continue to condition. Won't be on practice field. We like where he's at. Hopefully we can use him at the end of the year."
