Baltimore Ravens Make Huge Mistake By Cutting Jeremy Butler

Jeremy Butler impressed during the preseason. Evidently his strong performance wasn’t impressive enough:

According to reports, Jeremy Butler will not be part of the 53 man roster this season. Butler caught 31 passes for the team last year and showed signs that he was developing into a strong wide receiver. This preseason Butler led the NFL in receiving and played fantastically. Butler showed the Ravens why he deserved a roster spot, the Ravens evidently weren’t paying attention.

There is no way to spin this. This was a mistake. Butler is a 6’2″ wide receiver with a great build and explosive athletic ability. He can track the football with defenders draped all over him. Butler clearly showed that ability in his diving touchdown leap against the Detroit Lions. Butler played well, and it seemed like he was all but a lock to make the team. When the third preseason game ended, I thought he might even compete for a considerable amount of playing time.

We’re talking about a player whose hard work was evident from miles away. Butler has quickly developed into a completely new player. Who cares if Butler isn’t a special teams player if he is a play-maker at the wide receiver position?

Jeremy Butler went above and beyond what was expected of him. When a player does this in the preseason and gets cut, the preseason is rendered meaningless. If you’re keeping score at home, this is how it breaks down. The Ravens lost Ben Watson for the season. Also, Kenneth Dixon will be sidelined for a month. The most impressive performer got cut. When this happens, it is hard not to render the preseason meaningless.
