Westbrook's condition unknown after injury leaves him with dent in head

Russell Westbrook's condition is unknown after he suffered a scary injury that left him with a dent in his head.

Westbrook went down and stayed down for a minute after taking a knee to the head from teammate Andre Roberson in the final seconds of the Oklahoma City Thunder's 115-112 loss at Portland on Friday night.

Westbrook, who had a noticeable imprint on his right cheek, did not speak to reporters following the game while he was evaluated. There was no immediate word on his condition.

"The guy has the heart of a champion," coach Scott Brooks said. "He comes out every night. There are no excuses ever. He plays the game with everything he has."

Westbrook had 40 points, 13 rebounds and 11 assists. He became the first player to string together three straight triple-doubles since LeBron James in 2009.

But with a chance to tie the game at the line in the final seconds — after being fouled on a three-point attempt by Portland's Wes Matthews, who was trying to give an intentional foul — Westbrook made only two of three, and then was hit in the face in the scramble following his free throws.

The Thunder already were without Kevin Durant and newcomer Enes Kanter, who's out indefinitely with a thigh injury suffered the night before in a 117-113 overtime loss in Phoenix, which snapped their seven-game winning streak. Westbrook had 39 points, 14 rebounds and 11 assists, and rolled his ankle late in that game.

Westbrook entered the game averaging 30.4 points, 8.7 rebounds and 10.2 assists in February, garnering him increasing MVP buzz.

"He's been doing that for years, but obviously he's taking it to another level in February," said Brooks, who called Westbrook a "walking triple-double."
