The Grizzlies are trying to extend Mike Conley's contract

The Memphis Grizzlies weren't themselves in the playoffs, thanks to several serious injuries suffered by Mike Conley. The 27-year-old starting point guard is one of the toughest, most underrated players in the league.

Memphis is a completely different team when he's on the floor, which is precisely why they've reportedly already tried to lock him up on an extension. Here's ESPN's Marc Stein with more:

"Sources say, furthermore, that they've tried to engage Conley in extension talks. More than once. But the five-year, $40 million pact they signed Conley to in 2010 -- openly second-guessed all over the NBA map at the time -- proved to be too shrewd. So the consensus starting point guard on the league's All-Underrated Team simply can't sign an extension, working from the figures on his current deal, that could come close to the sort of offers he's likely to attract as a 2016 free agent at the age of 28."

On the surface, Conley doesn't seem worthy of a max contract. He's never made an All-Star team and only averaged 5.4 assists per game this season. But some smart franchise will almost definitely throw an offer in his direction.

He's very, very good on both ends of the court; as complete as floor generals come. The Grizzlies would be wise to give Conley whatever he wants.
