Report: Phil Jackson admitted to Fisher he could've been a better mentor
If you thought it was surprising to see the Knicks let go of former coach Derek Fisher, it was probably because you didn't expect to see Knicks president Phil Jackson part with one of "his guys" after only a year-and-a-half.
The Knicks couldn't have expected Fisher to come in immediately and coach well. He had just retired from the NBA as a player before signing with New York. He had never coached in his life.
Jackson, though, was supposed to help prop him up. Only those closest to Phil and Fish know if he did or didn't do an adequate job on that front, but ESPN's Ian Begley says Jackson may have conceded to Fisher he could've been better:
Fisher left New York with a 40-96 record over his two years there. He led the Knicks to a surprising 22-22 start, but got fired Monday after the team dropped nine of its previous 10 games.
