Before the game can occur, however, a number of former Knicks will enter Madison Square Garden as members of the road team.

The Knicks were one of the original teams in the BAA before the Association merged with the NBL to create the NBA. Thus, it’s hardly surprising that former members of the Knicks can be found scattered around the Association.

New York posted a picture welcoming back four former members of the Knicks who are now with the Timberwolves.

Once a Knick, always a Knick.

Tom Thibodeau was an assistant coach for the Knicks from 1996 to 2004. He helped Jeff Van Gundy lead New York to the 1999 NBA Finals and 2000 Eastern Conference Finals, and helped build one of the most dominant defensive units in league history.

Thibodeau is in his first year as head coach of the visiting Timberwolves after spending five seasons in the same position with the Chicago Bulls.

Scott Layden was the general manager of the Knicks from 1999 to 2003. He was the executive behind re-signing Allan Houston, trading for Antonio McDyess, and dealing Patrick Ewing to Seattle.

Layden is now the general manager of the Timberwolves.

Rick Brunson played 69 games for the Knicks between 1998-99 and 2000-01, and is now an assistant coach to Thibodeau with the Timberwolves. Rounding out that group is Cole Aldrich, who played 107 games for the Knicks between 2013-14 and 2014-15.

The hope in New York is that the Knicks can welcome them back amicably and then defeat the Timberwolves.

As the saying goes: once a Knick, always a Knick.
