Knicks' Carmelo Anthony to go to Team USA mini-camp in August
Carmelo Anthony clearly loves the big events. That's why it should come as no surprise he will be attending Team USA minicamp in Las Vegas next month.
From Marc Berman of the New York Post:
According to a source, Anthony has informed US Olympic Team officials he will attend the Aug. 11-13 minicamp as the team gears up for the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Anthony is still rehabbing from February’s left-knee surgery, so he will not be a fully active participant, according to a source. Team USA CEO Jerry Colangelo has encouraged roster members to come to the minicamp even if they can’t play due to injury.
Following surgery to repair his torn patellar tendon, Anthony was deemed out four-to-six months, meaning he’s on the very early fringes of his return. He is back on the court doing some basketball activities such as shooting and probably would participate similarly in Vegas.
The last time Melo actually played was during the All-Star Game, right before he was shut down for season-ending knee surgery. Before that, he pushed hard to play in the Knicks' scheduled game in London. He loves himself some big-time events, and playing with Team USA clearly counts as that.
It's hard to knock Melo for wanting to represent his country during an era when plenty of players don't want to go play on the national team, though. As long as he plays it safe, which he appears to be doing, then let's at least find some room to pat him on the back for wanting to show off for Team USA once again.
