Report: GM tells Pettitte not to waver

New York Yankees general manager Brian Cashman invoked the name of the most famous retirement waffler in a conversation with free-agent pitcher Andy Pettitte, New Jersey's The Trentonian reported Tuesday.

“(Pettitte is) opting not to play right now, but that might change, it might not. I told him, 'Don’t Brett Favre us,' ” Cashman said.

“You got to be all in and fully dedicated to play. Do I need him? I need him, but I don’t want him to play if his heart’s not in it,” Cashman added.

Pettitte has been home in Texas mulling a decision whether to retire or return to a Yankees rotation that currently lacks depth.

The three starters locked in are CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Phil Hughes. Ivan Nova will be a favorite to secure a spot during spring training, but the Yankees are hopeful he is a fifth starter with Pettitte taking up the other spot.

“Being from Texas and having to be in New York for six months out of the year can be hard because [Pettitte] has kids and he’s missing important time with them,” Cashman added.

Most seem to think the 38-year-old left-hander is leaning toward retirement after 16 seasons. Earlier this month, he told the Post he had not made a decision on his future.

Favre has retired and un-retired twice during his 20-year NFL career with the Packers, Jets and Vikings. The 41-year-old signal caller reportedly handed in his retirement papers to the NFL on Monday.
