INF Orlando Cabrera, Indians reach deal

The Cleveland Indians are doubling up on Cabreras.

The team agreed to terms on Thursday with free agent infielder Orlando Cabrera, a full-time shortstop during his major league career who is expected to compete for the Indians' starting job at second base. Cabrera's deal is contingent on him passing a physical.

The 36-year-old Cabrera played last season for the NL Central champion Cincinnati Reds. He has reached the playoffs for the last four years and six of the past seven, including stints with Minnesota, the Chicago White Sox and Los Angeles Angels.

Assuming he joins the Indians, Cabrera could be paired in the infield with Asdrubal Cabrera. The two Cabreras are not related.

Orlando Cabrera has played only 33 career games at second. He played 121 games at shortstop last season for the Reds, and batted .263 with four homers, 42 RBIs and 11 steals.

Cabrera could fill one problem area for the Indians, who used several players at second base and shortstop last season. Jason Kipnis is seen as an up-and-coming star with the club, but the Indians would rather have him start the year at Triple-A Columbus.
