HOUSTON (AP) Averion Hurts had 273 yards passing with a career-high three touchdowns, Tylor Cooks scored two first-quarter TDs and Texas Southern beat Mississippi Valley State 31-0 on Saturday night.

Cooks' 1-yard scoring run capped a 10-play, 85-yard drive to open the game. On the ensuing drive, MVSU (0-3, 0-1 Southwestern Athletic Conference) went three-and-out and, after a 27-yard punt was downed at midfield, Cooks scored on a 50-yard catch and run that made it 14-0 less than halfway through the first quarter.

Late in the second quarter, Hurts - older brother of Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts - hit Austin Watts, on third-and-8, for 49 yards and then two plays later, on third-and-10 from the 12, found Tracy Johnson to give Texas Southern (1-2, 1-1) a 21-0 lead at halftime.

MVSU finished with minus-10 yards rushing on 28 carries and just 160 total yards while converting on 2 of 14 third downs.
