Nate Sheppard 

RB · Duke Blue Devils 

Illinois' defense already showed a soft spot up front, allowing 194 rushing yards in a season-opening win over UAB, and that's bad news against a Duke offense built around Sheppard. The sophomore carried 35 times for a career-high 227 yards and both Blue Devils touchdowns in the 17-3 win over Tulane, the fifth-best single-game rushing total in program history. He enters Champaign a year removed from a 1,132-yard, 11-touchdown campaign that helped Duke win its first outright ACC title since 1962. If he finds the same lanes against Illinois' retooled front, Duke can control the clock and keep Katin Houser off the field.

 

Luke Mergott 

LB · Duke Blue Devils 

Duke's defense needs the graduate linebacker to be just as disruptive against a more explosive Illinois offense. Mergott forced a key third-quarter fumble that snuffed out a Tulane scoring threat, part of a defensive effort that held the Green Wave out of the end zone entirely in the opener. This week's assignment is tougher: Katin Houser threw for 182 yards and three touchdowns and added a rushing score in his Illinois debut without a turnover. Mergott and Duke's front seven will need to speed up Houser's timing and force the mistakes that didn't show up in his first outing.

Illinois handed the keys to a transfer quarterback for the third straight year, and Houser delivered immediately, completing 13 of 17 passes for 182 yards with three touchdown throws, an additional rushing score and no turnovers in a 42-23 win over UAB. The highlight was a 54-yard Hail Mary to Ty Robinson to close the first half, Illinois' first Hail Mary touchdown to end a half since 2019. He now faces a Duke defense that pitched a shutout in the scoring column against Tulane. How Houser handles that pressure will shape whether Illinois' offense can keep pace in front of its home crowd.

 

Ismael Kante 

LB · Illinois Fighting Illini 

Kante turned one read into six points last week, returning an interception 59 yards for a touchdown in the fourth quarter against UAB after primarily playing special teams as a JUCO addition in 2025. The fifth-year linebacker is being counted on for a bigger role in Illinois' defense this season, and he'll get another shot at a takeaway against a Duke passing attack that was efficient but modest in its opener, with Walker Eget completing just over half his throws for 131 yards. A turnover from Kante could flip field position and give Illinois' offense short fields to work with all afternoon.
