Iran qualified for its first FIFA World Cup in 1978, registering a draw with Scotland and losses to the Netherlands and Peru. Iraj Danaeifard scored the first goal for Iran in its match against Scotland.

It was not until 1998 that Iran reached its second World Cup. Though the team again did not advance past the Group Stage, Iran did notch its first World Cup victory, defeating the United States 2-1.
Iran failed to build off its 1998 World Cup win over the United States when it didn’t qualify in 2002, but the team was back in the field in 2006. After losses to Mexico and Portugal in group play, Iran managed a draw against Angola.
For the third time in four World Cup appearances, Iran finished with a record of 0-1-2. However, the results included a draw against Round of 16 participant Nigeria and a 1-0 loss to eventual tournament runner-up Argentina.
Iran is making back-to-back World Cup appearances for the first time ever. The team qualified on June 12th, 2017 with a 2-0 victory over Uzbekistan.
