Aaron Jones’ bid for a new contract is paying early dividends for the Green Bay Packers

Plays second fiddle to Jones Williams rushed eight times for 63 yards and added a two-point conversion but wasn't targeted in the passing game in Sunday's 42-21 win over Detroit.

Impact Williams averaged a robust 7.9 yards per carry but got limited opportunities behind Aaron Jones, who piled up 236 scrimmage yards and three touchdowns. Williams' touches will remain limited as long as Jones stays healthy. Up next for the Packers is a Week 3 trip to New Orleans.

Impact Williams did not do a lot in the yardage department in Week 1, but he did have quite a few opportunities to put up fantasy points, recording 11 touches, taking the field on 40 percent of the Packers' offensive snaps and even getting a carry from the two-yard line that he did not convert. He is the clear No. 2 running back in Green Bay for now despite the team's investment in second-round pick AJ Dillon -- top back Aaron Jones played 54 percent of the snaps and had 20 touches Sunday, while Dillon got only five snaps and two carries -- but Williams will still play some sort of regular role when Jones is healthy and is in position to be far more active in the offense should Jones be unavailable for any reason.

Impact There were whispers that -- after the Packers drafted running back AJ Dillon in the second round in February -- Williams could be released to open up salary-cap space for the Packers' impending big-name free agents. However, that turned out to be nothing more than speculation, and Williams -- set to become a free agent himself -- will remain in Green Bay for at least another year. Williams saw the field plenty last year despite playing behind Jones, and he figures to reprise a similar role in 2020.
