Full practice Wednesday
Mitchell (knee) practiced fully Wednesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mitchell has managed an uncapped session earlier than he did the previous three weeks as he puts his bout with knee irritation further in the rear-view mirror. During the recent three-game stretch, he averaged 24 touches for 100 yards from scrimmage per game while totaling two touchdowns. Mitchell will look to keep it going Saturday in the divisional round, taking on a Packers defense that has allowed 4.3 yards per carry (17th-most in the NFL) and 14 touchdowns (tied for 20th-most) to running backs in 17 regular-season contests.

Limited practice on tap
Mitchell (knee) will practice in a limited capacity Tuesday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
As has been the norm for Mitchell since he sat out Weeks 14-16 due to knee irritation, he's again being limited at practice, likely to keep him as fresh as possible with the 49ers in the midst of the playoffs. In the three games since being shut down, he's served as the team's workhorse running back with 69 carries for 300 yards and one touchdown to go with three catches on four targets for zero net yards and another score. Thursday's injury report will reveal whether or not Mitchell goes into the weekend with a designation for Saturday's divisional-round contest at Green Bay.

Finds end zone in wild-card win
Mitchell carried the ball 27 times for 96 yards and a touchdown in Sunday's 23-17 win over the Dallas in the wild-card round. He also saw two targets but lost 11 yards on his only...
Impact
The running back got the day started on a strong note for the 49ers by punching in a four-yard TD run on the team's first possession, giving San Francisco a lead it didn't relinquish. With Jimmy Garoppolo still nursing a thumb injury, the Niners will likely lean heavily on their run game again next weekend in the divisional round against the Packers, which should ensure a significant workload for Mitchell.

Cleared for wild-card round
Mitchell (knee) practiced fully Friday and doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's wild-card game against the Cowboys.
Impact
Even though Mitchell sat out the team's first practice of the week Wednesday, the 49ers provided no indication he was dealing with any sort of setback with the knee issue that kept him out for three consecutive games Weeks 14 through 16. He gradually increased his participation in practice throughout the week and should be ready to fill his usual role Sunday as the 49ers' lead option on the ground, just as he did in the final two regular-season games. In each of the last five contests he's played, Mitchell has picked up no fewer than 21 carries, so he'll likely remain heavily involved so long as the 49ers aren't forced into catchup mode early on during the postseason opener.

Bumps up to limited Thursday
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mitchell followed up Wednesday's absence with some reps one day later as he continues to tend to a knee injury. He's played through the concern the past two weeks, handling at least 54 percent of snaps on both occasions and earning 44 touches. During that same stretch, JaMycal Hasty and Jeff Wilson combined for four touches on 42 plays, indicating this is Mitchell's backfield when healthy and available. While he's not 100 percent, Mitchell may have his injury designation removed when the 49ers release their final practice report of the week Friday.

Held out of practice
Mitchell (knee) isn't practicing Wednesday, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Mitchell came back from a three-game absence and took 44 touches over the final two weeks of the regular season, but he's still bothered by his knee, with head coach Kyle Shanahan saying Monday that the running back's practice reps could be limited. The rookie is still expected to play in Sunday's wild-card game against the Cowboys, assuming he gets back on the practice field Thursday or Friday without any setbacks.

Practice limitations to continue
Coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday that the 49ers will continue to manage Mitchell's (knee) reps on the practice field this week, Matt Barrows of The Athletic reports.
Impact
Mitchell has been bothered by a knee injury since also picking up a concussion during a Week 13 loss at Seattle. He subsequently missed the next three games, but he's been active for the past two outings, logging at least 50 percent of snaps on both occasions en route to a combined 44 touches for 215 yards from scrimmage and one receiving TD. Last week, Mitchell followed up a DNP on Wednesday with a limited session Thursday and full practice Friday before being cleared of a designation entirely for San Francisco's eventual Week 18 win at the Rams. At the very least, he appears as if he'll have some practice limitations ahead of Sunday's wild-card game in Dallas.

Rushes for 85 yards in OT win
Mitchell rushed 21 times for 85 yards and did not receive a target as a receiver in Sunday's 27-24 overtime win over the Rams.
Impact
Mitchell did not carry an injury designation heading into this matchup, which has been a rare occurrence during an injury-filled rookie campaign. The 2021 sixth-round pick finishes the regular season way ahead of expectations with 1,100 combined yards and six total touchdowns in 11 games. It will be very interesting to see how the 49ers treat Mitchell's role next season when the team's running-back corps heals up, as he has clearly established that he can produce as the lead rushing option in a complex offensive scheme. Assuming Mitchell doesn't land on the injury report during practice this week, the rookie will lead San Francisco's backfield in a playoff matchup against the Cowboys next week.

Good to go
Mitchell (knee) doesn't have an injury designation for Sunday's game against the Rams, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Mitchell returned from a three-game absence last week and took 23 touches for 130 yards and a TD in the 49ers' 23-7 win over Houston. He should be busy again Sunday, regardless of whether Jimmy Garoppolo (questionable/thumb) or Trey Lance is starting at quarterback. In his first matchup with the Rams, back in Week 10, Mitchell took 27 carries for 91 scoreless yards and finished without a target in a 31-10 win for the Niners.

Returns to limited practice
Mitchell (knee) practiced in a limited capacity Thursday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN.com reports.
Impact
Not only did Mitchell work with the 49ers training staff on the side Thursday, he mixed into some drills, too. The activity was notable considering he didn't participate at all Wednesday as he continues to tend to knee irritation. The issue didn't stop Mitchell from tallying 21 touches on 36 offensive snaps this past Sunday against the Texans, as opposed to one touch on 19 such plays between reserves Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty. Assuming Mitchell gains clearance to play this weekend at the Rams -- whether it's on Friday's injury report or prior to Sunday's 4:25 p.m. ET kickoff -- he should remain San Francisco's lead running back Week 18.

Working on side Thursday
Mitchell (knee) was spotted working with 49ers trainers on a side field during Thursday's practice, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
It remains to be seen if Mitchell will mix into drills and be considered at least a limited participant Thursday, but it's also more activity than he displayed Wednesday as a non-participant. In the end, the 49ers may just be managing the knee issue that, along with a concussion, conspired to keep him sidelined Weeks 14-16. Mitchell was able to return this past Sunday against the Texans and again spearheaded the backfield to the tune of 21 carries for 119 yards while hauling in both targets for 11 yards and one touchdown.

ROTOWIRE
Sits out Wednesday's practice
Mitchell (knee) was a non-participant at Wednesday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Mitchell put an end to a three-game absence this past Sunday against the Texans, resuming his role as the 49ers' top running back with 23 touches for 130 yards from scrimmage and the first receiving touchdown of his career. The rookie sixth-round pick has been a revelation when healthy this season, with five 100-yard performances on the ground in 10 appearances. But it appears Mitchell's knee injury continues to bother him, so his status will be one to monitor throughout the week to ensure he isn't in danger of sitting out a seventh contest of the season Sunday at the Rams.
