Healthy to open training camp
Mitchell (knee) worked with the first-team offense at San Francisco's first practice of training camp, Jennifer Lee Chan of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Mitchell underwent a cleanup procedure in his knee after his rookie season, but it's safe to say he's back to full health, as the 49ers would have no reason to rush his return at this stage of the offseason. Per Dieter Kurtenbach of The Mercury News, Jeff Wilson, Trey Sermon and rookie Tyrion Davis-Price all looked impressive as well, but a healthy Mitchell should open the season as the clear top option in San Francisco's deep backfield.

Opts for offseason knee procedure

Impact
Mitchell was a fixture on the 49ers' injury reports throughout the 2021 campaign, with a combination of the knee, shoulder and rib injuries as well as a concussion keeping him sidelined for six of San Francisco's 20 contests, including the postseason. The knee issue first popped up in early December, but Mitchell continued to fill a lead role out of the 49ers backfield when he was available for the final five games, as he amassed 373 rushing yards, 68 receiving yards and two scores over those contests. His efficiency took a big hit, however, as he averaged 4.6 yards per carry through his first nine contests, compared to only 3.8 yards per carry in his final five appearances. Mitchell is hopeful that the knee procedure along with adding some extra bulk -- he plans to play at around 215 pounds in 2022 after hovering around 212 as a rookie -- will allow him to recapture the success he enjoyed during the early portion of 2021.

Gains 70 total yards in loss
Mitchell rushed 11 times for 20 yards and caught all three targets for 50 yards in Sunday's 20-17 loss to the Rams.
Impact
Mitchell didn't get much help from the usually-creative run designer Kyle Shanahan in this one. A good portion of the 23-year-old's carries were inside zone runs out of shotgun formations directly into the human wall that is known better as Aaron Donald. Mitchell was able to break free on a huge catch and run in an eventual loss, putting an end to an impressive rookie campaign (1,100 combined yards and six touchdowns over 11 regular-season games). It is unclear what the 49ers backfield will look like in 2022, but Mitchell clearly established himself as the team's best option, making him a strong fantasy asset heading into next season's drafts.

Ready for Sunday
Mitchell (knee) doesn't have a designation for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Mitchell endured a cap on his on-field reps this week, missing Wednesday's session before returning as a limited participant Thursday due to a lingering knee issue. Following a full practice Friday, it won't stop him from making a fifth straight appearance this weekend. In the previous four, Mitchell combined for 86 carries and six catches, while do-it-all Deebo Samuel accrued 48 touches and the rest of the backfield tallied four. Expect Mitchell again to receive a majority share of the running back reps Sunday.

Limited Thursday
Mitchell (knee) will be a limited practice participant Thursday, Cam Inman of The San Jose Mercury News reports.
Impact
After sitting out Wednesday's session, Mitchell is ramping up his activity level as he continues to deal with a knee injury stemming from a Week 13 road matchup with the Seahawks. Still, he's rid himself of a designation by the release of the 49ers' final practice report for three straight weeks, which he'll aim to do Friday. Assuming he's good to go for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams, Mitchell should approach his 23 touches per game from the past four outings.

Not practicing Wednesday
Mitchell (knee) won't participate in Wednesday's practice, Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area reports.
Impact
Once again, the 49ers are placing practice limitations on Mitchell due to the knee injury that has bothered him since early December. He hasn't had any problem playing through the issue, earning most of the snaps given to 49ers running backs over the last four contests. During that stretch, Mitchell has averaged 23 touches for 92.8 yards from scrimmage per game while scoring two touchdowns. He'll look to mix into drills Thursday and/or Friday and enter the weekend without a designation for Sunday's NFC Championship Game at the Rams.

Gains 71 yards on 20 touches
Mitchell rushed 17 times for 53 yards and caught three of four targets for 18 more yards in Saturday's 13-10 playoff win over the Packers.
Impact
The 49ers ran the ball early and often, but the Packers' defensive front was ready for that exact gameplan, leaving Mitchell with an inefficient rushing performance. The talented rookie finished second among both teams' position players with 20 total touches, which helped him put together a respectable 71 total yards of offense despite the low efficiency. Those looking to roll with Mitchell in the championship round won't find much of a soft matchup against either the Bucs or Rams, who both boast talented defensive lines. That said, Mitchell should safely clear 15 carries regardless of opponent next Sunday, a feat the back has accomplished in seven consecutive contests.
