Pirates vs. Nationals Prediction, Odds, Picks - September 14
Ronny Simon - Labrum surgery on tap The Pirates announced Wednesday that Simon has been diagnosed with a torn labrum in his left shoulder and will undergo surgery in October once the bone heals, MLB.com reports.
Impact Pittsburgh placed Simon on the shelf Aug. 30 with an injury the team initially labeled as a dislocated shoulder, but follow-up tests revealed that he was dealing with damage to his labrum. He'll miss the rest of the season, and assuming his upcoming surgery in October goes off without any complications, he's expected to be cleared for baseball activities in early March. Even so, the shoulder issue could make the 25-year-old Simon a non-tender candidate this offseason after he slashed a middling .234/.299/.273 over 88 big-league plate appearances with Miami and Pittsburgh in 2025.

Mike Burrows - Starting again Sunday Burrows is slated to start Sunday's game against the Nationals in Washington.
Impact After making a pair of relief appearances Aug. 30 and Sept. 3, Burrows slotted back into a starting role Tuesday against the Orioles, though the Pirates continued to manage his workload in his first full season back from April 2023 Tommy John surgery. In his start versus Baltimore, Burrows struck out six and generated 14 whiffs while permitting one run on two runs and one walk, but he was lifted after just four innings and 56 pitches. Braxton Ashcraft ended up piggybacking Burrows and covered three innings out of the bullpen, and the two appear likely to be deployed in tandem again Sunday, barring Ashcraft being used in relief behind starter Bubba Chandler on Saturday. Assuming the Pirates go with the Burrows/Ashcraft pairing again in the series finale in Washington, Burrows could struggle to reach the five innings he would need to qualify for a win.

Impact After turning in a shiny 2.25 ERA and 0.83 WHIP over 12 innings across three bulk-relief appearances to begin his time in the big leagues, Chandler was handed his first MLB start this past Sunday against the Brewers. The 22-year-old righty was handily knocked around by the NL Central leaders, lasting just 2.2 innings in a 10-2 loss while yielding nine earned runs on nine hits and three walks. Despite the wretched outing, Chandler will be deployed as a starter once again Saturday, though another poor showing could prompt the Pirates to shift him back to his prior bulk-relief role.

Impact The right-hander appeared on his way toward his seventh victory of the season with a 3-0 lead through five frames, but he was charged with a couple runs on three hits in the sixth before the Pirates bullpen faltered an inning later. Keller entered the All-Star break with a 3.48 ERA across 119 innings, but he has a 5.73 ERA in 10 starts since the midseason break.

Impact Holderman will end up as the odd man out of Pittsburgh's bullpen following Justin Lawrence's (elbow) return from the injured list. Justin Lawrence - Activated off injured list The Pirates reinstated Lawrence (elbow) from the 60-day injured list Friday.
Impact Elbow inflammation has kept Lawrence on the injured list since late April, but after more than four months on the shelf, the 30-year-old has been cleared to help out the Pirates for the final stage of the regular season. Lawrence was off to a strong start before getting hurt, posting a 0.79 ERA in 11.1 frames, but he struggled during his rehab assignment while surrendering seven earned runs in 7.1 innings. He'll likely be limited to middle relief upon rejoining Pittsburgh's bullpen. Meanwhile, the Pirates will send Colin Holderman to Triple-A Indianapolis to clear a roster spot.
