Cole Irvin - Hits wall in loss Irvin (6-9) took the loss Friday as the A's were downed 3-2 by the Rangers, giving up three runs on three hits over five-plus innings. He struck out five without walking a batter.
Impact The lefty took a shutout into the sixth inning, but Irvin got the hook after the first four Texas batters reached base on three singles and a hit by pitch, and Sergio Romo then allowed two of those inherited runners to score. Irvin has been one of the big surprises of the first half in the American League, and the 27-year-old will take a 3.65 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 78:19 K:BB through 106 innings into the All-Star break.

Lou Trivino - Heading into All-Star break hot Trivino, who secured his sixth hold in a win over the Astros on Thursday, hasn't allowed an earned run in 23 of his last 24 appearances.
Impact The hard-throwing right-hander also has two wins, eight saves and three holds during that 24-inning span, an impressively dominant stretch of relief work that has certainly endeared him to fantasy managers in all formats. Trivino coaxed his ERA back under 2.00 (1.96) with Thursday's scoreless frame against Houston, and it's worth noting his extensive success has come despite a significant drop in strikeout rate to 22.4 percent from 2020's 28.0 percent figure.

Ramón Laureano - Mini-surge at plate Laureano enters Friday night's action having gone 5-for-13 with two doubles, a walk, a stolen base and two runs across his last three games.
Impact The defensive wizard hadn't been holding up his end of the bargain at the plate very often prior to the current hot stretch, as Laureano had hit a miserable .093 (4-for-43) over the previous 11 contests. Whether the current productive streak has some staying power remains to be seen, but with 13 doubles, two triples and 13 home runs entering the final weekend of the first half, Laureano will head into the All-Star break on pace to exceed the career high 53 extra-base hits he laced back in 2019.

Jake Diekman - Tallies seventh save Diekman allowed one hit in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Astros.
Impact Diekman earned his seventh save of the season, but his first since May 26. He was presumably called upon in favor of Lou Trivino due to lefties Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker being due up in the final frame. Given that Trivino has racked up 13 saves to this point in the season -- seven of which came since Diekman's most recent save prior to Thursday -- he should be considered the Athletics' primary closer. However, with Trevor Rosenthal (hip/shoulder) ruled out for the season, Diekman should still see occasional save chances moving forward.

Frankie Montas - Earns eighth win Montas (8-7) allowed one earned run on five hits and one walk while striking out 10 across 6.2 innings to earn the win Thursday against the Astros.
Impact Montas dominated the Astros and recorded double-digit strikeouts in a start for the second time this season. He backed that with 22 swinging strikes on 95 total pitches and has now surrendered two earned runs or less in each of his last three starts. Montas will enter the All-Star break with a 4.41 ERA with 105 strikeouts across 100 innings on the campaign.

Mark Canha - Out through All-Star break Canha (hip) won't be reinstated from the 10-day injured list until after the All-Star break, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Impact Canha has been progressing well in his rehab recently, and manager Bob Melvin indicated earlier in the week that the right fielder had a slight chance to return this weekend. However, the Athletics will give the 32-year-old additional time to recover rather than rushing him back prior to the break. Assuming Canha remains on track in his recovery, he could be available for the first game after the break, which is July 16 against Cleveland.

Jacob Wilson - Contract selected Wilson's contract was selected by the Athletics on Thursday.
Impact The 30-year-old was drafted back in 2012 and finally gets his first crack at the big leagues following a long professional career which included nine seasons in the minors and a brief stint in Korea. He's hit the ball well in 49 games for Triple-A Las Vegas this season, homering 14 times while slashing .288/.385/.630. He's primarily played third base and left field this season but has started everywhere except pitcher and center field at some point in his career, so he'll give the Athletics a versatile option to replace Chad Pinder (hamstring), who hit the injured list in a corresponding move.

Sean Murphy - Takes seat Thursday Murphy isn't starting Thursday's game against Houston.
Impact Murphy will get a chance to reset after he went 0-for-8 with four strikeouts across the last two games. Aramis Garcia will start behind the plate and bat ninth.

Chad Pinder - Hits injured list Pinder hit the injured list as expected Thursday after injuring his right hamstring on the final out of Wednesday's game against the Astros.
Impact Manager Bob Melvin suggested after the game that Pinder would be in line for an extended absence. It now looks as though he'll miss at least a month, Matt Kawahara of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Jacob Wilson's contract was selected in a corresponding move.
JULY 8, 2021 • ROTOWIRE
Matt Chapman - Returns to lineup Chapman (illness) is starting Thursday's game against the Astros.
Impact Chapman missed Wednesday's game while battling a stomach flu, but he'll start at third base and bat fifth in Thursday's series finale. The 28-year-old has gone 5-for-14 with a run and three strikeouts across his last three appearances.
