Brent Rooker - Claimed by Oakland
Rooker was claimed off waivers by the Athletics on Thursday.
Impact
Rooker was designated for assignment by Kansas City on Tuesday but will land a spot on the Athletics' 40-man roster. He appeared in 16 major-league games between the Padres and Royals last year, and it's possible that he's forced to begin the 2023 season at Triple-A Las Vegas.

Hogan Harris - Protected from Rule 5 draft
Harris was added to the Athletics' 40-man roster Tuesday.
Impact
Harris turns 26 in December and has made just eight starts at Triple-A, logging a 6.35 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and 39:17 K:BB in 28.1 innings. Given his control issues and age, it might make sense for Harris to work in low-leverage situations out of the big-league bullpen at some point in 2023.

Lawrence Butler - Added to 40-man roster
Butler was added to the Athletics' 40-man roster Tuesday.
Impact
A physically impressive corner outfielder and designated hitter, Butler hit .270/.357/.468 with 11 home runs, 13 steals and a 31.5 percent strikeout rate in his age-21/22 season at High-A. Now that he is on the 40-man roster, the clock will be ticking on Butler to adjust to a higher level of pitching at Double-A.

Daulton Jefferies - Loses 40-man spot
The Athletics outrighted Jefferies (elbow) to Triple-A Las Vegas on Monday.
Impact
Oakland removed Jefferies from the 60-day injured list last week, but it was strictly a procedural move while the team weighed whether or not to tender him a contract for the 2023 season ahead of Friday's deadline. Given that Jefferies underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career back in September and had turned in poor ratios (5.75 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 9.5 K-BB%) over his 56.1 innings in the big leagues, it likely wasn't a tough decision for the Athletics to remove him from their 40-man roster. He'll stick in the organization and while he spends the entire 2023 season rehabbing from elbow surgery.
