Impact Oakland's Opening Day closer, Jimenez had his season interrupted early on by a right shoulder strain. After a fairly long shutdown period, Jimenez began ramping up and now appears to be on the verge of embarking on a minor-league rehab assignment. He's no sure thing to return to the closer role, but it's possible he could end up back in the ninth if the A's trade other bullpen arms but hold on to Jimenez, who is not arbitration eligible until 2025.

Ramón Laureano - Ready for live BP Laureano (hand) will take live batting practice Saturday, Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.
Impact A fractured left hand put Laureano back on the injured list last month after he missed time with a groin strain earlier this season. When healthy, the outfielder has mostly struggled (.635 OPS), though he can still provide some categorical juice as evidenced by his five homers and eight steals across 219 plate appearances. If all goes well Saturday, Laureano and the A's could then start mapping out a rehab assignment.

Esteury Ruiz - 'Further along' than expected Ruiz (shoulder) has resumed hitting off a tee and manager Mark Kotsay said Friday that Ruiz is "further along than I thought he would be," Sonja Chen of MLB.com reports.
Impact Ruiz remains without a set timetable to return to major-league action after suffering a right shoulder subluxation, but these words from the skipper are encouraging. There are still several important hurdles to clear, and it's possible Ruiz will need a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated. He still leads the majors in steals but his lead is down to two over Ronald Acuna (41).

Impact Tarnok has been working as a starter at Triple-A, logging a 2.12 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and a 9:9 K:BB in 17 innings over his four most recent outings. The 24-year-old righty could work in tandem with a lefty like Ken Waldichuk, but it's not initially clear when he will make his first MLB appearance of the year and whether it will be as a starter or long reliever.

Tyler Soderstrom - New era begins Soderstrom's contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Friday's game against the Twins.
Impact Soderstrom is as good of a candidate as any to be the face of the Athletics franchise going forward. The 21-year-old lefty hitter has huge raw power and could retain catcher eligibility for several years while playing almost every day at a combination of catcher, first base and designated hitter. Soderstrom, who was selected with the 26th overall pick in the 2020 draft, hit .254 with 20 home runs and 59 RBI in 69 games at Triple-A. There could be some initial growing pains with strikeouts and a low batting average, but Soderstrom has a chance to contribute positively in the four non-speed roto categories during his prime years.

Zack Gelof - Promotion official Gelof's contract was selected from Triple-A Las Vegas ahead of Friday's game against the Twins.
Impact Gelof, who is widely viewed to be Oakland's second baseman of the future, should play pretty regularly now that he's officially on the active roster. The righty-hitting 23-year-old slashed .304/.401/.529 with 12 home runs, 20 steals and a 27.9 percent strikeout rate in the hitter-friendly Pacific Coast League. A .410 BABIP propped up his batting average, but Gelof should at least chip in stolen-bases and occasional power as a rookie.

If he continues to produce well in the minors, the 21-year-old shortstop figures to end the season in Triple-A with a shot at cracking the majors at some point in 2024.

Impact Soderstrom has put up a .254/.303/.536 slash with 20 home runs over 69 games with Las Vegas this season while splitting his time between catcher and first base. The top prospect figures to see most of his action with the A's at first base and perhaps designated hitter, although with Manny Pina aggravating his wrist issue Sunday, Soderstrom could see some action at catcher, as well. He's 21 and his numbers in the minors this year were only decent, given the hitter-friendly environment. Still, Soderstrom is a premier talent who should be rostered in fantasy leagues, especially where he's eligible at catcher.
