Mitchell scores 27 to lift No. 5 Ohio State over Purdue

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) Kelsey Mitchell scored 28 points and Ameryst Alston added 25 as No. 5 Ohio State beat Purdue 90-70 on Sunday afternoon.

Shayla Cooper came off the bench to score 16 for the Buckeyes (13-4, 5-1), who snapped Purdue's nine-game winning streak.

Ohio State closed the first quarter on a 10-0 to open up a 24-14 lead, and the Buckeyes never trailed again. The closest Purdue would get was within four points early in the third quarter.

The game left Ohio State, Purdue (14-3, 5-1) and Maryland (16-2, 5-1) in a three-way tie atop the Big Ten standings.

April Wilson led Purdue with 19 points while Ashley Morrissette scored 17 and Dominique McBryde had 12.

Ohio State shot 59 percent from the floor while holding the Boilermakers to 39 percent.

The Buckeyes led by as many as 16 in the second quarter, but Purdue outscored the hosts 9-2 in the final four minutes of the half to cut the deficit to 38-29 before intermission.

Purdue scored the first five points of the third quarter to cut the deficit to four, but Alston made back-to-back layups to double the lead again.

With the Boilermakers keeping the pressure on, Cooper went 3 for 3 from the 3-point line in the third quarter, including back-to-back treys that stretched the Buckeyes' lead back to 13 midway through.

She finished 4 for 4 from beyond the arc, and Ohio State went 13 for 23 as a team.

The Buckeyes entered the game averaging 6.9 made 3-pointers per game.

Purdue: The Boilermakers fell to 2-2 this season against ranked opponents.

Ohio State: The Buckeyes beat Purdue for the third straight time and improved to 44-28 in the all-time series.
