Skipping Waino
Remember that not-so-scary issue with Adam Wainwright's elbow? As a precaution, the Cardinals will skip over Wainwright for tonight's scheduled start against the Mets, with an eye on getting him back for Saturday's game versus the Phillies. If anything changes as the week progresses, we'll let you know. Carlos Martinez gets the spot start in Wainwright's place tonight, but since he hasn't thrown more than 2 2/3 innings all season, don't expect a long outing.
On to the rest of the news:
Twins 3B Trevor Plouffe has been placed on the DL with a ribcage injury. Eduardo Escobar started in Plouffe's place on Sunday, with Danny Santana at shortstop. However, with OF Aaron Hicks also on the DL, Pedro Florimon figures to get time at short while Santana plays more center field.
Mat Latos tossed six shutout innings in his return to the mound on Saturday. Not bad at all.
Streaming starters: Jose Quintana got beat up on Friday, Jarred Cosart notched a win on Saturday, and Brad Peacock was just south of mediocre on Sunday; we're down to 42-32 for the season. Tonight, we'll try Brandon McCarthy (owned in 1.4 percent of FOXSports.com leagues) and his 5.29 ERA one more time against the Brewers; Tuesday's pick is Seattle lefty Roenis Elias (18.4 percent owned) versus the weak-hitting Padres. Did you know that the Padres have scored just 208 runs, which is 40 fewer than the next-worst team in MLB?
Phillies 3B Cody Asche (hamstring) played three rehab games over the weekend, including a two-homer outing on Friday. He should be back any day now.
Stephen Drew (oblique) returned to the Red Sox' lineup on Sunday, and had two hits. In other Sox news, SP Clay Buchholz probably needs one more rehab start before activation, while 3B Will Middlebrooks and OF Shane Victorino are on rehab assignments.
Rays SP Jeremy Hellickson is scheduled to make another rehab start on Tuesday, and could be back with the big club after that.
The Astros are hoping that 2B Jose Altuve (hand) will return to the lineup on Tuesday.
A's OF Josh Reddick (knee) will begin a rehab assignment on Tuesday, and could be activated as soon as this weekend.
As expected, Cubs 2B/OF Emilio Bonifacio (oblique) was placed on the DL on Friday.
If you missed it, the Cardinals sent OF Oscar Taveras to the minors when activating 1B Matt Adams on Friday.
Finally, my colleague Ryan Fowler scouted blue-chip Cubs 3B prospect Kris Bryant (.358 BA, 22 HR, 57 RBI, 60 R, 8 SB, 1.174 OPS at Double A) over the weekend. Here's his report:
See you back here tomorrow morning.
