One day after signing former Miami Dolphins defensive lineman Jared Odrick to a contract worth $42.5 million, the Jacksonville Jaguars announced Thursday they have released defensive end Red Bryant, who started in all 16 games for them last season after coming over from the Seattle Seahawks.

Bryant turns 31 next month and was due a $500,000 signing bonus Saturday. While he was brought in to improve the Jaguars' defense against the run, they showed only minimal improvement in that category, finishing 27th out of 32 teams in that category compared to 29th in 2013.

The addition of Odrick and the decision Sunday to re-sign Tyson Alualu gives the Jaguars two defensive ends whose primary strength is stopping the run. Odrick was used mostly as a tackle with the Dolphins but could be used more at an end depending on how fully tackles Sen'Derrick Marks and Roy Miller can recover from their respective knee injuries late last season.

By releasing Bryant, whose six seasons prior to coming to Jacksonville were all spent in Seattle, the Jaguars now have only four players on their roster 30 or older -- tight end Marcedes Lewis, defensive end Chris Clemons, middle linebacker Paul Posluszny and kicker Josh Scobee.
