Vancouver Canucks coach Willie Desjardins will have a bit of a delay in his return to hockey this fall. The bench boss had surgery following an acute flare up of a preexisting hip condition, the team announced Wednesday.

In a statement released by the Canucks, the team said Desjardins will miss both training camp and the Young Stars tournament, but he should be back behind the bench for opening night.

"Willie has been dealing with the chronic discomfort for a long time and our medical staff has been monitoring it since he joined us last year," Vancouver GM Jim Benning said in the statement. "Unfortunately his hip deteriorated rapidly in recent weeks and it required immediate attention."

The team said its assistant coaches will handle all preseason duties, and Utica Comets head coach Travis Green will manage the Young Stars tournament.
