Vancouver Canucks Assign 2 Players to Utica Comets

The Vancouver Canucks are speeding towards the allowed roster limit, trimming the team by two more players.

After a long series of roster cuts yesterday, the Vancouver Canucks assigned forwards Michael Carcone and Alexis D’Aoust to the AHL Utica Comets. Carcone was signed as a free agent from the QMJHL this summer while D’Aoust is on an amateur tryout deal — he will have to prove himself at Comets training camp.

Carcone, a 5-foot-9 forward who can play at center or on either wing, is a late bloomer. He broke into the QMJHL at age 18, and recorded 12 goals and 41 points in 50 games as a rookie with the Drummondville Voltigeurs. In his second season, Carcone had a true breakout year, as he tallied 47 goals and added 42 assists for 89 points in 66 games.

D’Aoust, another 20-year-old forward, spent four full seasons in the ‘Q’, with the Shawinigan Cataractes. Throughout that time, he improved his point totals yearly, going from eight points in his rookie season to 44 goals and 98 points in 2015-16 — fourth-best in the league.

Both Carcone and D’Aoust sat out for the first preseason game against the San Jose Sharks, but saw game action in a 5-3 win against the Edmonton Oilers. In that game, Carcone recorded one assist, D’Aoust went scoreless.

Nobody expected either player to make the Canucks roster, so these moves are no surprise.

Especially Carcone had a strong Young Stars Classic and training camp, though, so he should be a great addition to the Comets.

D’Aoust showed flashes of pro potential, but he is no lock for the Comets. Judging by what we’ve seen so far, however, D’Aoust should be able to get at least an AHL deal with the Comets, or end up with the ECHL Alaska Aces.

The Canucks’ next game will be played on Friday, September 30, against the Calgary Flames. Tomorrow and after that game, they will likely make several more roster moves, heading towards the 23-player limit.
