The Toronto Maple Leafs most elite players have moved from honored to retired after a lengthy ceremony prior to the Leafs v. Bruins game.

The numbers that are of note for the current group of Toronto Maple Leafs presently in the lineup are #21 and #93.

Mitch Marner wore #93 for the London Knights and likely would have wanted that number in Toronto. Tonight’s ceremony explains why he wears #16.

Over the last four seasons many people have picked up jersey’s with #21 on the back representing James van Riemsdyk. Well, that’s over. The Leafs put #21 up as retired tonight and van Riemsdyk will now be sporting #25 for the remainder of his time with the club.

In the JVR case, you can either enjoy that you have a jersey with the number prior to its retirement, or you can be extremely angry that the jersey is now a lie.

Dave Keon received the biggest star treatment on the night, getting the last banner and being honored as being named the top Toronto Maple Leafs player in club history. Keon was voted #1 on the Leafs Top 100 list that was released a few days ago.

In the off-season, the old banners were sent off to rinks in the hometown of the players to pave the way for these newer, and similar, banners.

With the new wave of retired numbers, the Leafs now sit with the second most retired numbers in the entire National Hockey League. Only the Montreal Canadiens (18) have more numbers unavailable to current players.

What do you think of the numbers being retired? Too many? Overdue? Irrelevant? Let us know in the comment section what you think of the Leafs ceremony tonight.
