Reports: Subban, Canadiens make their cases to arbitrator
The Montreal Canadiens and their restricted free agent defenseman PK Subban attended a planned arbitration hearing on Friday, according to multiple reports.
TSN.ca reports that the two parties met for four hours in Toronto. The arbitrator, Elizabeth Neumeier, will make a decision for how Subban will be compensated within two days.
"It's been an educational process for me," Subban said after the hearing. "I will move on from today and get ready for the season. We have to live with those decisions."
Habs general manager Marc Bergevin reportedly did not speak with the press when leaving.
It remains a possibility that the two sides hammer out a deal before the award is announced.
Earlier in the week, Ken Campbell of The Hockey News reported on Twitter that Subban is looking for $8.5 million, while the Canadiens are taking aim at a one-year, $5.25 million contract.
"Habs elected for one-year award for Subban because they can take him to arb next summer," Campbell tweeted on Wednesday. "Also can negotiate new deal earlier on one year."
Subban was selected by the Canadiens with the 43rd pick in the 2007 draft. He has played 284 games with the club, recording 42 goals, 125 assists, and a plus-10 rating. He won the Norris Trophy as the league's top defender in 2013.
