Red Wings GM: 'Our hope is that Mike [Babcock] wants to stay'

One of the biggest names on the NHL coaching market, Detroit coach Mike Babcock, is not actually on the market yet, and the Red Wings sound like a team that will try to keep it that way.
Red Wings general manager Ken Holland spoke to local outlet M Live Thursday and told the paper that the organization plans to make coach Mike Babcock an offer to stay.
"There's an element of urgency, but not hours or days," Holland told M Live in regards to a contract offer for Babcock. "Probably in the month of May."
Babcock also suggested in a postseason press conference Friday that talks with Holland would happen soon.
But keeping Babcock could be easier said than done. The coach raised questions about the team's age after losing a first-round series to the younger Tampa Bay Lightning, and Babcock will have plenty of options to coach elsewhere should he choose to reject Detroit's offer.
"He's regarded in the industry as one of the top coaches in the game, if not the top coach," Holland said to M Live. "He's in the prime of his career. Our hope is that Mike wants to stay, but he's positioned himself to have the option to explore."
