Rangers to give scholarships in Boogaard's memory
The New York Rangers are handing out two annual camp scholarships to military children in memory of forward Derek Boogaard, who died earlier this year.
The Rangers say Wednesday that two 8-year old boys from New York, who have family members in the military, will attend the weeklong Rangers Summer Youth Hockey Camp this month at the Madison Square Garden Training Center.
They were chosen from the Defending the Blue Line program, created by soldiers to make hockey accessible to military children. Boogaard donated four tickets to every Rangers home game last season to military families. He dubbed the group ''Boogaard's Boogaardians.''
The 28-year-old enforcer was found dead on May 13 at home in Minneapolis. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner said Boogaard's death was accidental, caused by a toxic mix of alcohol and the powerful pain killer oxycodone.
