Power play woes come to an end, Orlov sends Duchene flying and Grubauer Records his first NHL shutout as the Washington Capitals win.
As Washington opened its third game of the season with a heart felt ceremony honoring Braden Holtby for his sensational season tying the record for most wins in a season. From there, the night kept getting sweeter for the boys in red. From the opening draw, the Caps were some hungry hungry hippos chasing after pucks, finishing checks and keeping Varlamov extremely busy in net. The Washington Capitals were able to handily snag its second win of the season dominating Colorado with a 3-0 win at home. Washington outshot Colorado 40-18. Here are a few things to note from Tuesday nights game.
More from Stars and Sticks
1.Power play woes have endedAfter a whole 2 regular season games played in the NHL season, The Capitals were scoreless on the power play. Of course, panic, mayhem, rioting and looting struck the streets of D.C. due to this “long” power play drought. After 2 unsuccessful but productive power plays, Washington cashed in on its first power play goal of the year. From none other than you know who, The Great 8 and his sweet spot on the hash marks. Midway through the second, Oshie added another tally to the power play, notching his first of the season. Oshie also buried a layup from Ovie late in the third. By the looks of it, Washington’s power play has found its mojo.
2. Philip Grubauer Shutout
It’s no secret that Washington has one of the best, of not the best goaltenders in the NHL. (Holtby) A hidden Gem that the majority of the league has yet to discover, is the solid backup Washington has between the pipes. Philip Grubauer recorded his first NHL career shutout, recording 18 saves in the process. Having a skilled backup this season will keep the Capitals steam rolling this season. Excellent game from the young goaltender.
3. Dmitry Orlov is the real deal
If you missed the game, there is absolutely know way you haven’t seen this highlight from Orlov. It was like something from the Bash Brothers in D3 Mighty Ducks. With a speedy Matt Duchene speeding in the zone, Orlov stepped up, lowered his body and sent Duchene flipping through the air like Free Willie. It was comparable to a Stone Cold Steve Austin takedown but completely legal.
Unless Ovechkin body checks an opponent into the stands, this should absolutely be the NHL hit of the year. Orlov also added an assist and played strong offensively and had limited mistakes defensively. Maybe a bit premature, but it seems that one-year contract has Orlov in a “prove it” mind set.
