Peters calls it quits after six seasons

Andrew Peters is retiring from the NHL after six seasons with the Buffalo Sabres and New Jersey Devils.

The 31-year-old forward signed with Florida as a free agent last summer but was traded to Vancouver in October. He was unable to win a spot on the Canucks' roster and chose to retire after clearing NHL waivers this week.

He said in a statement Friday that he is ''very fortunate to have had the opportunity to play with and against the best players in the world.'' He calls playing in the NHL his ''ultimate accomplishment.''

Peters played in 229 NHL games for Buffalo and New Jersey. He was a union-player rep and player representative on the NHL Players' Association's executive board.
