No deal between Canucks and Subban

In the fourth round of the 2013 NHL draft, the Vancouver Canucks selected Jordan Subban, the brother of Norris Trophy-winning P.K. and highly-touted goaltending prospect Malcolm.

While Jordan's older brothers were practically shoe-ins for the NHL (P.K. was selected in the second round, while Malcolm was a first round selection), Jordan has had a bit of an uphill battle towards a guaranteed NHL contract. While P.K. is built with a lot of power and Malcolm relies on his athleticism, Jordan is just a 5'9" defenseman.

Should the Canucks and Jordan not get a contract signed by June 1, Jordan would re-enter the draft this season as a 20-year-old.

Jordan is an offensively-strong defenseman, finishing his season with the Belleville Bulls in the OHL with 25 goals and 52 points in 63 games, and added three more goals in four games in the playoffs.

This season, Vancouver's defensemen struggled to generate offense, with only one player, Yannick Weber, finishing with at least 10 goals (he had exactly ten). Their blue line also doesn't have too many promising young defensemen prospects, especially offensive-minded defensemen.

Jordan is still a long way from seeing consistent NHL time, but the Canucks shouldn't want to lose him for no reason.

Canucks General Manager Jim Benning has stated that he is confident the Canucks will sign Jordan, so why not go ahead and get that in order?
