New York Islanders Sign Dennis Seidenberg to One Year Deal
The New York Islanders added another ex-Bruin to their defensive lineup today. It’s an odd move, but one that generally fits with Snow’s M.O.
Dennis Seidenberg was given a one-year $1 million deal by the New York Islanders today. The deal was initially reported as rumored by TSN’s Darren Dreger, only to be confirmed just a few minutes later by Arthur Staple.

The ex-Boston Bruin was bought out with two years remaining on a four-year $16 million contract signed at the start of the 2013 season. He finished last year with 11 points in 61 games for the Bruins, as they missed the playoffs for a second year in a row.
Seidenberg spent the last seven years with the Bruins totaling 17 points, 164 penalty minutes in 401 games winning a Stanley Cup with the team in 2011.

Odd-ish Move
Bringing in Seidenberg is a little perplexing for the Islanders. Their defensive spine is strong enough to allow it to support a few rookies to make the step up to the next level.
Players like Ryan Pulock, Adam Pelech, and Scott Mayfield. With the addition of Seidenberg their chances of making the team fall dramatically. It’s also a little odd seeing as how Mayfield, the defacto odd man out, just signed a two-year $1.250 million one-way deal with the Islanders.
On the other hand, this type of move isn’t totally out of character for GM Garth Snow. He brought in Marek Zidlicky last year on a similar type deal.
Like Zidlicky, Seidenberg brings a wealth of experience to the team, but unlike Zidlicky, Seidenberg has a Stanley Cup ring on his finger. Something that will likely come out as a deciding factor in bringing in the current Team Europe defenceman.
The New York Islanders won’t the only team interested in Seidenberg it seems, they were just the first to put an offer on the table. The $1 million payout means that the Islanders are effectively cap strapped, with $158,254 in cap space according to Cap Friendly.
It’s a low-risk type of contract, but one that never-the-less leaves this Isles fan scratching his head. What was the goal here? Championship caliber experience? Didn’t we get that with Andrew Ladd?
