The New York Islanders have come out of the gates to the 2016-17 season very poorly. They’ve played worse than their 4-6-2 record for the most part. Even though it’s early, the Islanders enter a critical time. This is new ownership’s first big test.

Everyone has heard the chants at the Barclays Center regarding firing Jack Capuano. It appears the majority of New York Islanders fans also would like to see Garth Snow go as well.

This is year one of the new ownership tandem of Scott Malkin and Jonathan Ledecky. Every new ownership group wants their tenure to get off to a strong start. They cannot be thrilled.

Malkin and Ledecky have seen lethargic starts, inconsistent play at best, lack of scoring, blown leads late in games, and a power-play that has been beyond porous.

Everyone is searching for answers and the fanbase is well beyond upset and impatient.

What to Do

This is the first big test for Malkin and Ledecky. Do they fire Capuano? Do they fire both the head coach and Garth Snow? Do they stay patient with the current regime?

Word is the Islanders are investigating trade options thoroughly. NHL trades in-season are now a rare occurrence, let alone impactful one’s. But would one trade solve all of the Islanders problems?

Through last year’s draft, the Islanders had George McPhee as part of their front office. If McPhee was still with the Islanders, ownership could easily hand over the general manager reigns to McPhee and allow him to pick a new coach.

However, with McPhee now the man in charge in Las Vegas, that is not an option. If ownership makes changes they must have a clear plan of attack.

Learn A Lot

We are going to learn a lot about the new Islanders owners. This early part of the season has been a big struggle for the organization.

Will Malkin and Ledecky show patience or will they be aggressive and make changes? As William Shakespeare once said “that is the question”.

One thing is for sure, even if Malkin and Ledecky go the route of patience, the Islanders better start winning soon because the clock is definitely ticking.
