Stephen Gionta signed a pro tryout contract with the New York Islanders for the upcoming season. The undersized veteran was most likely brought in for at best veteran depth.
Here’s what his agent had to say
“The (salary) cap is squeezing the middle class out,” said Steve Bartlett, Gionta’s agent and the president of Pittsford-based Sports Consulting Group. “Teams would rather have guys on two-ways (contracts) fill those spots and move them up and down.
“But a few years down the road, unless they become the stars, they’ll be the ones getting squeezed out.”

His agent isn’t wrong. The salary cap does play a role especially for the lesser players. “Middle Class” is a polite way of saying veteran player who is a borderline NHL player.
In all likelihood Gionta will spend the season in Bridgeport and possibly make a handful of appearances with the big club. The Isles have a crowded group of forwards, and Gionta would find himself on the bottom of that list talent wise.
