The New York Islanders said goodbye to long time play-by-play announcer Howie Rose and welcomed Brendan Burke to the MSG booth. He was impressive in his debut.

It’s going to be weird not hearing Howie Rose’s voice when tuning into watch the New York Islanders on the MSG Networks. He’s done it since as long as I’ve been watching and has been loved by fans despite starting his hockey broadcasting career with the other New York team.

That said, Brendan Burke is a refreshing new voice to this booth. He has a tremendous voice, and seems extremely polished despite his young age.

As someone who currently studies broadcasting in college I can appreciate his talent. I always found broadcasting interesting and I find that I can really analyze someone’s voice and see what they are good at.

Burke has that national feel with his deep steady voice, yet he does something that a lot of these national guys are lacking. He seems conversational, which is extremely important.

The national guys are doing different teams each week. I’m assuming Burke will do 82 games or something close to it and it’s important to grow a relationship with the listener.

Here was his first goal call

He keeps it short, simple and to the point. It’s not too over the top nor is it bland, just like Baby Bear’s porridge it’s just right.

Classy move by Cal Clutterbuck to congratulate Brendan as well.

Hopefully we get to hear a lot more “SCCCCOOOORRRREEESSS” this year out of Brendan Burke. He has big shoes to fill coming after the legend Howie Rose but when it’s all said and done he will have a legacy of his own.
