Montreal Canadiens Prospect Sven Andrighetto AHL Player of the Week

The Montreal Canadiens were questioned when they placed Sven Andrighetto on waivers. He is making the most of his demotion as he was named the AHL’s player of the week today.
Montreal Canadiens prospect Sven Andrighetto has been named the American Hockey League’s player of the week. Andrighetto put together an impressive first week in the AHL to come away with the honour.
Andrighetto was placed on waivers last week by the Montreal Canadiens. When he cleared, he was sent down to the AHL’s St. John’s Ice Caps. I opined at the time that it was silly and risky to put the 23 year old winger on waivers. However, he went unclaimed and is now making the most of his demotion.
The Switzerland born right winger scored 23 points in 26 games with the Ice Caps last season. He was called up to the Canadiens where he posted 17 points in 44 games.
After a disappointing training camp, Andrighetto was not able to land a roster spot with the big club again this season. He clearly hasn’t let it bother him and is making his best case to be the next player called up to the Canadiens.
Nightly Recap of Andrighetto’s Impressive Week
In action on Friday night, Andrighetto was held off the scoresheet until he put the game away with an empty net goal late in the third. Goaltender Charlie Lindgren was the hero of that game as he made 50 saves in a 4-1 Ice Caps win.

On Saturday, the Ice Caps fell 5-4 in overtime to the Springfield Thunderbirds. Andrighetto set up a Chris Terry power play goal in the first period. He followed that up by assisting on a Charles Hudon PP marker in the second period. Not wanting to be shutout for a single frame, Andrighetto scored to put the Ice Caps ahead 4-2 in the third.
They ultimately blew the lead, but you can’t blame Andrighetto for the loss considering he had three points.
On Sunday afternoon, the Ice Caps wrapped up their three games in three days weekend. They faced off against the Hartford Wolf Pack and once again, Andrighetto led the way.
The third round pick of the Montreal Canadiens in 2013 scored just 36 seconds into the game. He then set up another Hudon power play goal late in the period to give the Ice Caps a 3-1 lead. This time, they wouldn’t blow it and wrapped up a 2-0-1 weekend thanks to Andrighetto carrying them offensively.
