Messier's Canada loses Spengler Cup final

A Canadian team coached by NHL great Mark Messier lost to SKA St. Petersburg 4-3 Friday in the final of the Spengler Cup.

Maxim Sushinsky scored twice for the Russians, who escaped after a finish featuring three goals in the last 90 seconds.

Messier, in his first major coaching stint, had a team mainly of Canadian players based in Europe. The Spengler Cup was first held in 1923 and is the world's oldest pro hockey tournament.

Alexei Yashin and Maxim Afinogenov scored in the second period to put the Russians up 3-1. Brett McLean made it 3-2 with a power-play goal 18:38 into the third.

Sushinskiy scored his second of the game into an empty net 19 seconds later. Josh Holden deflected in a shot with two seconds left.
