Man combines Mark Messier, Sept. 11 tribute in strange back tattoo

Published Feb. 4, 2016 12:43 p.m. ET

What do Mark Messier and the Sept. 11 tragedy have to do with each other? Not much, aside from the fact that both have a place in New York history. But one man honored both Messier and Sept. 11 in a giant back tattoo, and it's all a little much to take in.

From the picture, it seems possible that the man had the Messier tattoo done first, which would make sense considering Messier helped the Rangers to a Stanley Cup championship in 1994, seven years before Sept. 11. But the end result means that it looks like Messier is rising out of the dust of the Twin Towers.

As if the tattoo itself is not strange enough, this man was actually walking around Madison Square Garden with his shirt pulled up like this.
