TORONTO (AP) Jordan Staal scored on a rebound in overtime, Eddie Lack stopped 31 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes downed the Toronto Maple Leafs 1-0 on Thursday night.

Staal started the play with a rush up the ice and beat his man to the net to chip in the ricochet off a shot from Justin Faulk at 2:54 of the extra period.

Carolina jumped out to a quick start and had its first scoring chance just a minute into the game but couldn't cash in.

Pierre-Alexandre Parenteau had Toronto's first real chance to score on a goal-mouth scramble while on the power play midway through the period, but couldn't get good wood on a Lack rebound.

The third period lacked any real danger or scoring threats. Carolina took a 37-27 shot lead into overtime.

James Reimer stopped 39 shots.
