According to Sportsnet’s Mark Spector, the Oilers could be interested in pursuing the 25-year-old. He’s a big defender, and can serve as insurance for the team finishing the season.
Gelinas has struggled greatly this season, and is a minus-5. He has just a single assist, and hasn’t made the most of his ability.
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound blueliner has the perfect frame for the NHL. Not to mention, he has a booming shoot, and is excellent when he is making the most of his size.
However, there is plenty of room for improvement. He has to upgrade his defence game, and needs to add more physicality to his game. Given his size, he should be utilizing his side and adding that edge to his game.
He is still young, and with the Oilers, he could definitely flourish into a better defender. Gelinas could serve as the team’s extra defender, replacing Eric Gryba and adding more depth to the lineup going forward. Though he’s a left shot, he could serve as a depth player in case of emergency.
Overall, I think it would be worth looking into for the Oilers.
