Edmonton Oilers: Davidson, Pakarinen Injury Updates

The Edmonton Oilers were dominant in a 3-2 win over the Los Angeles Kings Sunday; however, it wasn’t all positive. Despite a strong overall game, the Oilers lost a couple of players to injury.
Iiro Pakarinen was the first victim, and early in the first period, fell victim to injury. He appeared to be gripping his leg and had difficulty getting off the ice. The injury looked severe, and before the start of the third period, Edmonton announced he wouldn’t return.

Brandon Davidson was next to face a scary injury, one that led to a huge power play for Edmonton. As he skated through the neutral zone, Tanner Pearson came in to check him. When trying to finish his check, he left his skates and threw his left shoulder straight into Davidson’s jaw. The Edmonton blueliner then fell to the ice in pain.
Pearson was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for the blow to the head. Davidson skated off to the locker room, and before the third period, the Oilers announced that he would not return.
Head coach Todd McLellan gave injury updates post-game, giving details and timetables. Pakarinen will be out for at least a month with a lower-body injury, and Davidson is day-to-day as of right now.
When it comes to Pearson, he will likely receive some kind of hearing from the NHL’s Department of Player Safety. Though he was only trying to finish his check, he left his skates and clearly targeted Davidson’s head.
Pakarinen’s injury gives many right wingers the chance to slot in and replace him to begin the season. Potential candidates include Jesse Puljujarvi, Anton Slepyshev and Tyler Pitlick, all of who have impressed so far at camp. As for Davidson, let’s hope he doesn’t need a replacement for too long.
